Can I Travel To Egypt With Expired Passport?
It is not possible to travel to Egypt with an expired passport. People who are hoping to visit Egypt must be in possession of a valid passport with at least 6 months validity remaining.
A passport is an essential travel document issued to you by the government in your home country, and it allows you to travel to nearly all international destinations. In short, passports make international travel to places like Egypt possible.
Most passports are valid for 5 years or 10 years, depending on the issuing country. Because of this long validity, and especially in the case of 10-year passports, many people forget to check when their passports expire.
Nearly all countries, including Egypt, have passport expiration rules. Some have what is known as a passport 6 month rule, while some have what is known as a passport 3 month rule. Egypt has a passport 6 month rule.
Egypt’s 6-month passport validity requirement means that your passport must have at least 6 months validity remaining, as from the date of your arrival in Egypt. If you don’t meet this requirement, you will not be allowed to enter the country. In addition to the mandatory 6-month passport validity requirement, your passport must also have at least one blank page.
Expired Passports and Tourist Visas
If your passport has expired, it is no longer a valid passport, in which case it won’t be possible for you to obtain a tourist visa for Egypt. And, if by some chance you find yourself in a situation where your passport expires after you have already been granted a tourist visa, your visa will automatically become invalid the moment your passport expires.
Visas are linked to your passport number, so once your passport expires, so too does your current visa. Once you receive your new passport, you will then need to apply for a new visa.
What Happens if my Passport Expires before I Leave Egypt?
It is highly unlikely for anyone to be in a situation where their passport expires while they are still in Egypt. However, if you did find yourself in this sort of situation, your only option would be for you to contact the embassy or consular office of your home country, and ask for a temporary passport or an emergency travel document.
Bear in mind that if your passport were to expire while you are in Egypt, your visa immediately becomes invalid, which essentially means you will then be in the country illegally.
It cannot be stressed enough, if your travel plans include international travel, the very first thing you need to do is check your passport’s validity.
Can I Travel to Egypt with Expired Passport for Emergency Reasons?
Even for very urgent travel, you will need a valid passport with 6 months validity remaining. If you are an Egyptian citizen living or working abroad, and your Egyptian passport expires you will need to apply for a new passport at your nearest Egyptian Embassy or consular office, or ask for an emergency travel document. If one is granted, you should return to Egypt as soon as possible.
Are there Any Nationalities that Don’t Need a Passport or a Visa for Egypt?
As of the time of writing, the citizens of the following 7 countries/territories could visit Egypt for up to 3 months without a visa:
- Bahrain
- Hong Kong
- Kuwait
- Macao
- Oman
- Saudi Arabia
- United Arab Emirates
While the citizens of the above listed countries/territories can visit Egypt without a visa, they must still meet Egypt’s passport requirements. They too cannot travel to Egypt on an expired passport. They must have valid passports with at least six months validity remaining, and at least one blank page.
Airlines and Expired Passports
If you are still wondering, can I travel to Egypt with expired passport; the answer is a resounding “No, you cannot”. Airline companies would be your first hurdle. No airline company is going to allow you to board one of their aircraft if you do not have a valid passport. When you get to the check-in desk at the airport, you will almost certainly be turned away.
In the unlikely event that that you do somehow manage to board a flight to Egypt, the Egyptian authorities will deny you entry and you will be ordered to board the next flight back to your own country. Egypt is not the only country that takes this stance. All other foreign countries also have rules regarding passport validity.
Even if you are an Egyptian citizen living or working abroad, and your Egyptian passport has expired, it is extremely unlikely that you would be allowed to travel back to Egypt with a expired passport, even in the case of urgent travel.
Once again, if you have any international travel plans in mind; your first priority is to check the expiry date of your current passport.
Can Minors Travel to Egypt with a Passport or with an Expired Passport?
While some foreign countries allow minors to visit without having their own passports if they are accompanied by their parents, this is not the case in Egypt. Egypt’s passport requirements and visa requirements are the same for children as they are for adults.
If you are going to be visiting Egypt as a family, each family member will need to have their own passport, and you will all need to have valid visas.
