Alexandria City Tour from Alexandria Port
Itinerary
On the day that your Alexandria City Tour from Alexandria Port is due to begin, your English speaking guide will be waiting for you at the Alexandria Port exit gate with a placard bearing your name on it. Once the two of you have met up, your tour, which lasts for approximately 6 hours, will begin.
Your first stop today will be at Pompay’s Pillar, a huge Roman triumphal column that was erected between 298 and 302 AD to honor Diocletian who was the Roman Emperor at the time. The column originally supported a large statue of the emperor in body armor but today only the column remains. It is Alexandria’s only remaining ancient monument that is still standing in its original location.
Your next stop will be at the fascinating catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa which is considered to be one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages. This ancient necropolis is home to several tombs, statues and a variety of other archaeological objects of the Pharaonic funerary cult. However, the site also shows clear signs of Imperial Roman and Hellenistic influences. One of the main features at the site is a circular staircase that was used to transport the deceased down to their tombs which had been carved out of the bedrock.
For countless years, the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa remained off the radar and were only re-discovered in 1900 when a donkey fell into the access shaft. To date, three sarcophagi have been found at the site, along with a collection of human and animal remains.
After visiting the catacombs, you will then be taken to a good quality local restaurant to enjoy some lunch. Enjoy your meal at leisure and then you will visit the imposing Qaitbay Citadel which was built on the site of the old Alexandria lighthouse.
Enjoy some time exploring the Citadel and then you will visit the ultra-modern Bibliotheca Alexandrina which was built to replace the original Alexandria library which was, or at least partially, accidentally destroyed by fire as a result of Julius Caesar during his 48 BC civil war
Following your visit to this absolutely magnificent library, you will then be driven back to Alexandria Port where you will be dropped off at the entrance gate. Your 6 hour Alexandria Tour from Alexandria Port will now have come to an end but you will have enjoyed 6 hours which will not soon be forgotten.
