Egypt in January

Egypt has been a top holiday destination for many decades already, and many people who have visited Egypt at different times of the year would tell you that January is the best time to visit. Because January is part of the peak tourist season, some would say that it is an expensive time to visit, but we don’t really believe it is. Egypt is a surprisingly affordable place to visit, and it is certainly a lot cheaper to visit Egypt than it is to visit many other popular tourist destinations.

With so many people booking holidays to Egypt in January, this is also a great time to visit if you enjoy meeting new people. Just keep in mind that if you are hoping to visit Egypt in January, it is important to make all your bookings well in advance. The same applies if you are hoping to enjoy a Nile cruise in January.

With beautifully mild weather and maybe even a splash of rain, this is a great time to visit Egypt.

Inside the breathtaking Temple of Abu Simbel, the illuminated statues of Ramses II welcome visitors with an awe-inspiring display of ancient Egyptian grandeur.

Festivals in Egypt in January

The biggest and best known event in January is Orthodox Coptic Christmas which is celebrated on the 7th of January every year. There are approximately 10 million Christians living in Egypt, of which 90% are Coptic Orthodox Christians. Coptic Orthodox Christmas is a very special time in Egypt, and also a national holiday.

Some Christians celebrate Christmas on the 25th of December, as is done in other parts of the world. While there are some differences in traditions, the two Christmases are essentially the same.

While Coptic Christmas is not a festival in the true sense of the word, there are usually a lot of festivities and special events taking place on the 7th of January. If you visit Egypt in January and you have the opportunity to attend a Coptic Christmas celebration, you should snap it up.

Weather in Egypt in January

One of the main reasons why people book their holidays to Egypt in January is because of the weather. January is Egypt’s coldest month and also the wettest month, but don’t expect much rain.

As a general rule, the days are mostly pleasantly warm, while the nights can actually be quite cold. In Cairo, Egypt’s capital city, average daytime temperatures range from 51F (about 10.5C) to 74F (about 23C), with the average daytime temperature being 67F (about 19.4C). Be warned, at night temperatures in Cairo usually drop to around 44.6F (about 7C) in January.

As you head further south to places like Luxor, Aswan and Abu Simbel, the days are slightly warmer than they are in Cairo, but the nights are colder.

In Sharm El-Sheik, a coastal resort best known for its beautiful beaches and some of the world’s best SCUBA diving sites, average daytime temperatures range from 68F (about 20C) to 73F (about 23C).

As you can tell from the above, the weather is lovely and mild in January, even if the nights can be quite chilly. Now you can see why so many people like to book holidays to Egypt in January.

What to Wear in Egypt in January

This is a question which many people ask when they book holidays to Egypt in January. When visiting in January, it is highly unlikely that you will experience any very hot weather, so there is no real need to wear loose fitting lightweight clothes. Instead, you can simply wear whatever clothes make you feel the most comfortable.

On most days you could comfortably walk around in a pair of shorts and a t-shirt if you wanted to. However, since Egypt is a Muslim-majority country where people tend to dress modestly and conservatively, we recommend that you do the same, and for female travelers, even more so. Long dresses or long slacks and long sleeve tops are ideal. While virtually no Egyptian men where shorts pants, male tourists are welcome to, but considering the cooler temperatures, we would still recommend slacks or trousers.

When temperatures do dip during the day to the point where you need to put on an extra layer of clothing for warmth, try to choose garments which can donned and removed with minimal effort, because once the clouds vanish, you will want to dress down with ease. In the case of female tourists, a pashmina is ideal for this, and it would be a good idea to carry one around with you. They are sold everywhere in Egypt and they cost hardly anything at all.
