Thanksgiving in Egypt

Holidays to Egypt in November

Min (middle right), the Egyptian god of vegetation and fertility

While modern-day Egyptians don’t celebrate Thanksgiving, and while there is not a Thanksgiving holiday in Egypt, this was not the case with the Ancient Egyptians. Technically, the Ancient Egyptians also never had any “Thanksgiving” holiday as we know it today. Instead, they had a Harvest Festival, which was the Ancient Egyptian equivalent of Thanksgiving. The harvest festival was held in honor of Min, the Egyptian god of vegetation and fertility.

The Ancient Egyptians called the harvest season Shemu (season of harvest) and it typically lasted from March to May. It was during this spring harvest season that the Egyptians had their harvest festival, which included a parade and a huge feast, which was then followed by music, dancing, and even sports events. The festival was of such importance that even the pharaoh would take part in the parade.

Fun Fact: Ancient farmers in Egypt believed that that a spirit lived in their crops, such as corn, and they feared that the spirit would become angry with them when they harvested their crops. To safeguard against this, they would often weep and pretend to be grief stricken while harvesting their crops.

Festivals in Egypt in November

The dates of many festivals and religious celebrations in Egypt are based on the Islamic lunar calendar (Gregorian calendar). As a result, the dates vary from one year to the next. Generally speaking, there were no festivals that take place annually in November.

With the above having been said, the Mild un Nabi festival sometimes takes place in November. The Mild un Nabi festival lasts for 24 hours and celebrates the birth anniversary and death anniversary of the prophet Mohammed.

In view of the above, Egypt tours in November are not ideal if you are hoping to attend one or more festivals during your private Egypt tour. While there are no set festivals in November, there is almost always some sort of celebration or festival occurring in Egypt, regardless of when you choose to visit.

Weather in Egypt in November

Holidays to Egypt in November are a great choice if your schedule allows for it because the weather in Egypt at this time of year is just perfect for most people. In November you can expect average minimum daytime temperatures of around 19 C (about 62 F), while average maximum daytime temperatures are around 28 C (about 82 F).

Sure, most days in November are warm, but they are not unbearably hot, while the evenings are pleasantly cool, and best described as being balmy. With average daytime temperatures being what they are, November is a particularly good time to visit Egypt if you plan on spending part or all of your vacation at one of Egypt’s coastal resorts such as Hurghada or Sharm El-Sheikh.

In coastal areas like Sharm El-Sheikh, average daytime temperatures range from 20C to 28 C, which is just perfect for getting a tan or for enjoying various watersports or other beach activities.

Booking a Nile cruise in November is also a good idea if your schedule allows for it because there is almost always a gentle breeze when you are out on the river. In short, holidays to Egypt in November are a great idea, even if only to enjoy the lovely weather.

Remember, even though average temperatures rarely exceed 28 C in November, the days are sunny, so it is important to protect yourself from sunburn.

What to Wear in Egypt in November

The Dream Stele, also called the Sphinx Stele, in front of the Great Sphinx, Giza Plateau

Holidays to Egypt in November are excellent for all sorts of activities, including sightseeing, Nile cruise holidays, SCUBA diving, and relaxing beach holidays. How you dress while you are in Egypt can make a huge difference to your personal comfort.

Being an Islamic country, and a rather conservative country, Egyptians tend to dress conservatively. However, most Egyptians are very tolerant regarding tourists and the way in which tourists choose to dress, so visitors are free to dress as they wish, although women who wear very revealing clothes are likely to attract attention, even in Egypt’s bustling cities, including the country’s capital city, Cairo.

Of course, if you are going to be spending time in  a place like Sharm El Sheikh on the Red Sea coast, most locals have long since grown accustomed to scantily dressed tourists, especially on the beaches.

If you want to stay cool and comfortable while visiting the breathtaking sites of Ancient Egypt, lightweight, loose fitting clothes are best. For holidays to Egypt in November, a loose fitting pair of slacks or a long dress, along with a loose fitting long sleeved top will help you to feel as comfortable as possible while at the same time offering great sun protection. For even greater comfort, be sure to look for clothes made from a breathable material such as cotton.

As far as footwear is concerned, we would recommend having a comfortable pair of sandals, along with a pair of sturdy walking shoes or trainers to wear during sightseeing tours.

Female Travelers Visiting Mosques

If you are a female traveler, be aware that you will need to cover your hair, neck and shoulders when entering any mosques. If you are wearing a dress or skirt, it should also reach to beneath your knees. Alternatively, you can wear a pair of long pants or slacks. If your choice of clothes is deemed to be too revealing, you may be asked to don a long robe before entering the mosque, or you may be refused entry.

What to Pack for Egypt in November

Holidays to Egypt in November can be an awesome experience that will leave you with lifelong memories. Knowing what to pack can make your trip an even more amazing experience because you will already have everything you need before you even arrive in the country.

Apart from the sort of clothing we have mentioned above, there are a few other things you should pack for holidays to Egypt in November, or at any other time of the year for that matter. Here are a few things which should be in your suitcase before you get on the plane for your flight to Egypt:

  • Good quality sunscreen lotions with a SPF (Sun Protection Factor) no lower than 15. Ideally, you should look for sunscreen lotion that has a SPF of 30 to 50.
  • Good quality sunglasses, preferably with Polaroid lenses.
  • A wide-brimmed hat to shield your head, face, and the back of your neck from the sun.
  • A head scarf (female travelers) to cover your hair if you intend to visit mosques.
  • A lightweight jacket or cardigans for wearing in the evenings which can be surprisingly cool, regardless of where about in the country you are.
  • A universal power adapter. Plugs in Egypt have two round prongs/pins. It is also worth noting that the power supply in Egypt is 220V and 50Hz.
  • Suitable digital storage for photos and videos. Make sure your camera or mobile phone has plenty of memory (storage space) because you will be taking plenty of photos and probably lots of videos as well. Rather than risk running out of storage space, consider packing in some extra memory cards.
  • Over the counter medication, such pain killers, and some anti-diarrhea medication in case you get Mummy Tummy (upset stomach).
