When we plan and craft our Egypt Historical Tours, our primary aim is create tours that can satisfy or even surpass the expectations of those travelers who visit Egypt to learn about the country’s fascinating history which dates back many thousands of years. One could say that nearly all of our Egypt tours are historical tours, and to a great extent they are.

However, what makes our Egypt Historical Tours different is that they also feature numerous historical sites that are not old enough to be considered ancient.

Ancient Egyptian Monuments

Our Egypt Historical Tours typically include visiting many of Egypt’s ancient wonders, as well as many other fascinating Egypt tourist attractions that often have a considerably shorter history, including mosques, churches, monasteries and other types of historical landmarks. In the next few paragraphs we will look at a few such sites, but since we can’t include them all, we will only look at those that are most likely to feature in our most popular itineraries.

All of our existing Egypt historical tours will include visiting attractions such as the Giza Pyramids and the Sphinx; the Djoser Step Pyramid at Saqqara, and Memphis. Some tours will feature all of these sites, while other tours will only feature the Giza Pyramids and the Sphinx. If you book one of our Egypt tour packages that include a Nile River cruise, then you will also be taken to see several other ancient monuments, including the Temple of Philae at Aswan, Horus Temple at Edfu, Luxor and Karnak temples at Luxor, and more.

Egypt’s Amazing Museums

Just about every one of our tour packages, including our Egypt Historical Tours, includes a visit to the famous Egyptian Museum in Cairo. This incredible museum houses thousands upon thousands of artifacts documenting more than 5,000 years of Ancient Egyptian history. However, due to limited space, only about 100,000 items are on display, representing about half of all the artifacts being held at the museum. Once the all-new Grand Egyptian Museum opens at Giza, the number of items on display will be significantly higher.

Other museums which may or may not feature in our Egypt historical tours include the Museum of Islamic Art and the Coptic Museum, both of which are located in Cairo. The Nubian Museum in Aswan is another museum which features in several of our tour packages, and particularly those which include a Nile River cruise.

Mosques, Churches and other Places of Worship

Cairo and the surrounding area are home to numerous historical mosques, churches and monasteries, two of which feature in many of our Egypt historical tours: the Mohamed Ali Alabaster Mosque, and the Coptic Church of St. Virgin Mary, best known as the Hanging Church of Cairo. These two venues are both of great historical and religious significance, but they are far from being the only historical places of worship in the region.

If you are interested in such attractions, then you should also consider visiting the Al Hussein Mosque which is the holiest Muslim site in Egypt. Other mosques to consider would be the Mosque of Ibn Tulun and the Mosque of Amr Ibn El-As, the very first mosque to be built on the African continent.

Other Christian sites worth visiting would include places such the Monastery of St. Simon the Tanner; the Church of St. George; the Church of St. Barbara, and the Church of Abu Serga. These last three churches are all located in an area of the city known as Coptic Cairo and it is believed that the Holy Family stopped to rest here, inside a cave located beneath the Church of Abu Serga.

Modern Historical Attractions

While there is essentially nothing spectacular about Cairo’s infamous Tahrir Square, it is certainly of great historical significance, not least because of the fact that it is been the epicenter of protests and demonstrations which forever changed Egypt’s history. Other interesting sites which would fit in perfectly with Egypt historical tours include the Cairo Tower; Baron Empain Palace and Abdeen Palace. Luxuriously appointed and lavishly decorated, Abdeen Palace with its 500+ rooms is today considered to be the most lavish palace in the world.

Medieval Historical Attractions

Two medieval sites which feature in nearly all of our Egypt historical tours are the Saladin Citadel and the Khan El Khalili Bazaar. The Saladin Citadel dates back to 1183 CE when it was built around the ancient city in order to protect the city and its inhabitants against the invading crusaders.

There are a number of mosques in the citadel that are well worth visiting, along with a number of museums, including the Police Museum and the National Military Museum. Many locals also head for the summit to enjoy spectacular views and the nice cool breeze which is almost always present.

The Khan El Khalili Bazaar dates all the way back to 1389 and it has remained a trading area ever since. Today, it is the most visited site in Egypt, not least because this is where most average Egyptians living in Cairo go to for their daily needs. It is also one of the top Cairo tourist attractions. One could even go as far as saying that no visit to Cairo is complete if you have not visited the famous Khan El Khalili Bazaar.

Babylon Fortress is yet another amazing historical site located in Cairo. This impressive site was built during the 6th century and it holds the record of being one of the most formidable fortified cities ever built in the country.
