Located in The Opera District of downtown Dubai, one would be forgiven for assuming that it must be a dedicated opera house. In reality however, Dubai Opera is so much more than just an opera house.

Instead of being devoted entirely to opera, Dubai Opera is best described as being a venue which is devoted to the performing arts, including things like ballet dancing, musicals, live concerts and etc. In fact, Dubai Opera also hosts a variety of exhibitions, which makes it a good candidate for any list of “must-see” attractions in Dubai.

While this venue is certainly not going to be a top priority for all visitors to Dubai, it is nonetheless a great addition to a city which already has so much to keep visitors entertained.

If you intend booking one of our Egypt and Dubai packages and you will like to visit Dubai Opera during your stay, but without having to arrange your own transport, just let us know. We will then amend your itinerary to include transport to the venue and then back to your hotel.

Dubai Opera – A Brief History and Overview

Dubai Opera is a 1901 seat, multi-format, performing arts center located in Downtown Dubai.

Dubai Opera is a 2,000-seat ultra-modern multi-format venue devoted almost entirely to the performing arts, although it can also be used for hosting exhibitions and conferences. Like many other Dubai tourist attractions, Dubai Opera was developed by Emaar Properties, one of the largest property developers in the United Arab Emirates. The company also has a major presence in the global market, including North Africa, Europe and the United States.

Despite having developed several notable properties in Dubai, the company is probably best known for developing Burj Khalifa. This in itself should be enough to assure anyone that Dubai Opera is certainly not your average opera house.

Plans for developing Dubai Opera were first announced in 2012, and building work was completed during the first half of 2016. On the 31st of August 2016, Dubai Opera opened and hosted its first performance, a performance by none other than Placido Domingo, one of the most highly regarded names in the world of opera.

One of the venue’s biggest “stand-out” features is the ease with which it can be converted from an opera house to a regular theater, banquet hall, or even a place for exhibitions. Integrated into the design is a state-of-the-art hydraulics system which makes it possible to relocate as many as 900 seats with the push of a button. If any of this seating is not required for a particular event, hydraulic lifts and specially designed seating wagons are used to effortlessly move the seating areas to an underground storage facility.

The Dubai Opera was designed and built in the shape of a traditional Dhow boat, with the bow being home to the venue’s main stage, the orchestra and the seating areas. The remainder of the Dhow’s hull consists of parking spaces, taxi drop-off and pick-up areas, and beautifully decorated waiting areas.
