Is it Safe to Travel to Jordan as a Woman?

Jordan is actually a very safe country for tourists. Naturally if you are a woman, you might be wondering, is Jordan safe for solo female travelers? Seriously, Jordan is an exceptionally safe destination for women, even for woman traveling on their own.

With all of the above having been said, there are a few things you can do to make your trip even safer, or at least, help you to feel safer.

Dress Appropriately

Jordan is a Muslim-majority country and also a rather conservative country. Despite the fact that Jordan is far more liberal than some of its neighbors, it is still a Muslim country, and Jordanian people, particularly Jordanian women, dress conservatively.

Female travelers who want to avoid attracting negative attention should opt for loose-fitting clothes, preferably long-sleeve shirts, slacks, and/or long dresses. Dressing in this manner will help you to avoid unwanted attention, and it will also help you to avoid getting sunburnt.

Things like miniskirts, short pants, leggings, tank tops and other tops that show a lot of cleavage are best avoided because these are generally viewed as sexual clothes.

Is it safe to travel to Jordan as a woman if you don’t want to dress conservatively all the time? Yes, you should feel safe traveling to Jordan as a woman, regardless of how you choose to dress. However, as mentioned previously, you are likely to attract negative attention, and especially if you visit areas that don’t receive many tourists.

In places like Amman, most Jordanians won’t even bat an eyelid unless you are wearing very revealing clothes. The same applies when you are visiting major Jordanian tourist attractions such as the Lost City of Petra, Wadi Rum, and the Dead Sea.

As surprising as it may seem, in certain parts of the capital city, Amman, most Jordanians are dressed more or less exactly the way the average person dresses in the West. In this regard, Jordan is far more liberal than some of its neighbors such as Iran and Saudi Arabia,

Must Women Wear A Hijab In Jordan?

Unlike in some Arab countries, wearing a hijab is not mandatory in Jordan. With that having been said, you will find that the overwhelming majority of Jordanian women choose to wear the hijab.

Many female tourists also choose to wear a hijab while they traveling in Jordan, even if it’s only for sun protection. At the end of the day, it’s really a matter of personal choice and completely up to you if you want to wear a hijab or not.

Same-Gender Couples in Jordan

Is it safe to travel to Jordan as a woman who has a same-gender spouse or partner? Yes, but bear in mind that public displays of affection of frowned upon in Jordan, regardless of gender. Consensual homosexuality was legalized in Jordan in 1951 with the age of consent set at 16. Despite this, homosexuality is not exactly celebrated in the country.

Let us just say, your safety is not going to be put at risk simply because you are visiting Jordan with a same-sex partner. Still, if you wish to avoid negative attention, you should refrain from showing public displays of affection.

Should you Hire a Tour Guide?

Is Petra safe to visit on your own, or is it better to hire a tour guide. Whether or not to hire a tour guide all comes down to personal choice and your travel style. As we have mentioned already, you have nothing to worry about in terms of personal safety when you visit Petra, so in this regard, it is not necessary for you to hire a guide.

With the above having been said, having a local guide accompany you around the site can make for a more rewarding experience. However, unlike many of the ancient monuments in Egypt, Petra can be enjoyed even without a tour guide.

If you only wanted to see Petra’s top features such as The Treasury, Colonnaded Street, the Monastery, and so on, then it would probably be best to have a guide with you. If, on the other hand, you want to have the freedom to stroll around and explore the entire site for as long as you want, then it really isn’t necessary to pay for a guide. Instead, simply pick up a brochure at the visitor center when entering the site.

Jordan after Dark

Is Jordan safe for female travelers at night? Women are considerably safer in Jordan than they are in many western countries. In cities like Amman, you generally don’t need to worry about your safety, even at night. Just like in any other modern city, you will find many locals out and about in the city after the sun goes down. As long as you stick to areas where there are plenty of other people, you really won’t have anything to worry about.

For female travelers, Jordan is one of the safest countries in the entire Middle East, and it doesn’t change when the sun goes down. However, a little bit of common sense can go a long way in helping you to stay safe. For example, avoid areas which are poorly lit and/or deserted, especially at night, and even more so if you’re a woman traveling alone.

Visiting Jordan after Israel

Is it safe to travel to Jordan as a woman after visiting Israel? Tourists, including female tourists, are welcome to visit Jordan after Israel. If you flew into Israel and you fly out of Israel, you won’t even have an Israeli stamp in your passport. If you cross from Israel into Jordan via a land border crossing, you may have an Israeli stamp in your passport, but his will not be a problem for you when you enter Jordan.

Visiting Jordan as an Independent Traveler

Is Jordan safe to travel as a woman who is traveling independently or is it better to explore the country by way of a professional package tour? As we have already said, Jordan is an exceptionally safe country so even if you will be visiting independently, you don’t really have anything to worry about in terms of personal safety.

For most independent travellers, including female travellers, the language barrier is typically a bigger concern than personal safety in Jordan. Bear in mind that very few people speak English, and this includes bus drivers, taxi drivers, and etc. Because of this, we would highly recommend that you consider hiring an English speaking male or female travel guide to accompany you to the various sites you intend visiting.

Consider booking a Professionally Designed Tour Package

Is it safe to travel to Jordan as a woman? As we have already said, Jordan is an exceptionally safe tourist destination for female travelers. With that having being said, you can add an additional layer of security by booking a professionally-designed Jordan tour package that includes professional tour guides and private drivers. This obviously also helps in terms of the language barrier.
